Magic Academy

Second to being a reviewer for the World’s best software site, wizardry is represents perhaps the ultimate job for kids growing up today. Following the success of Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings, it seems everyone is fascinated by the idea of learning magic spells and performing mysterious tricks, and.

Magic Academy aims to provide you with the chance to act out your these fantasies by sending you to wizard school where you’ll have to learn the ropes in order to find your missing sister.

Magic Academy is essentially just a hidden-object game, but it’s been dressed up with an elaborate plot, slick graphics and moody sounds.

Moving through the game is a matter of meeting various characters and solving the puzzles they set you in order to garner information before moving onto the next character.

While most of these puzzles involve simply finding items on a screen or solving spot-the-difference games, the developer has been careful to make these as lively as possible.

We liked the way that you’re not just given a list of things to find, and instead must work out what to find based on silhouettes of the objects, find items before the next ones are revealed, or find several of a particular item, such as mice, keys or documents.

The complexity of the game is just about right. At first we thought the time limits for each level were a little generous, but it only takes one particularly well-hidden mouse to get your pulse racing as the clock ticks down to zero.

There’s no doubt that the game requires a very sharp eye, so it may not be suitable for younger children or people whose eyesight is slightly poor .

However, there were only a couple of occasions where we needed to restart a level.

Unlike many games in the hidden-object genre, Magic Academy holds your attention well and there is a genuine incentive to solve each puzzle in order to meet new characters and piece the overall mystery together.

The characters are graphically impressive (including one of your character's sister’s friends who bares an uncanny resemblance to a certain bespectacled teenage wizard), although the interaction with them is limited.

There are no voices and conversations are limited to clicking through preset statements. We didn’t like the way they kept referring to us as ‘Annie, ’ and given that you have to enter your name before you play, it would have nice if it was your name that was used in the conversations.

The game adopts a very linear approach, and if you’re looking for a strategy game where you get to explore different places and piece together cryptic clues yourself, you’ll be disappointed.

However, Magic Academy is by far one of the best hidden-object style games we’ve played, providing challenging gameplay within a well-crafted environment.

Penguins Arena 1.3

Penguins Arena is an enjoyable first person shooter (FPS) with good game play.

In this playful FPS, as a penguin fighting for his tribe's supremacy over the world, you'll have to eliminate all the other penguins, throwing snowballs at them to push them off the island and into the shark ridden waters. Each level is a different island with hills, ice walls and holes.

The game play is pretty intuitive. You use your keyboard to move around and jump and the mouse to shoot. You'll see all the action from the penguin's perspective, which really immerses you in the game. To survive you'll not only have to dodge the other penguins' snowballs but also pick up the bonuses that get scattered around. As you'll advance through the game more weapons , such as bombs, claws or clownfishes will also be available.

The only weak point to the game is the multiplayer mode. When we actually could manage to find other players to fight against, the game crashed, in what seemed to be a memory issue.

An original plot, great game play and lots of bonuses make for a perfect arcade success. It's a shame online play doesn't work well.

Penumbra: Black Plague

If you like horror movies and you love PC games then Penumbra: Black Plague will probably be right up your street.

You take the role of Phillip, who must find out what happened to his father, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. You are trapped in a shadowy, underground complex where threats, ghouls and ghosts are waiting to pounce. To prevent succumbing to their clutches, you must collect clues and solve puzzles while dealing with psychological traumas that prevent you in your quest.

Indeed, it seems the main aim of this game, apart from finding your father, is maintaining your hero's sanity. The eerie mood is bolstered by a creepy soundtrack and sound effects that crank up the tension as you struggle with your puzzles. The game uses some terrific 3D graphics and what the developers call "real-time lightning" that give the game a high degree of depth and realism. The game's plot links together very well with successive puzzles that you solve and I like the way that the game imposes few limits on what you can and can't do in the game. You can for example pick up more or less anything you see and move them around by dragging and dropping them with your mouse.

For atmosphere, this game wins full marks although it's very slow moving and if you're not the puzzle solving type, you'll probably lose interest very quickly.

Need For Speed World 1.8.40.1166

Need For Speed World is a free online version of the popular racing game franchise. It's a massively multiplayer open world game (MMO), so you will be able to join in with many other players from around the globe, with RPG style leveling up and improved cars to unlock. You can add new friends to enter contests or compete against each other.

A huge open world to explore

To start playing Need For Speed World, you need a user account. Once you have it, simply create a driver profile and choose your first car from an initial small, and not very exciting, selection. Just like any other role playing game, you’ll have to start completing races to get experience points. As you start leveling up, you’ll find better cars to buy.

Players can move freely in Need For Speed World. If you take a break, you can explore this huge world and study new courses or pursuits, but you can also join the integrated chat module to add friends. The entire time, youre only a mouse click away from entering online and offline races. These can be multi or single player, and you can even get into police chases.

The game is free, but not the extras.

Need For Speed World is free, but you'll have to pay for any extras. The game has an integrated game shop where you can, for example, purchase car insurance to protect your vehicle, rent a more powerful car for a specific race, or buy power-ups for the one you already have.

An intuitive game

Need For Speed World is quite intuitive, but the arcade-style handling also means that it's not especially accurate or realistic. You can take turns at full speed or gentle drift, and you can boost your car to push stubborn opponents around. Although there won't be any visible damage on the car, you'll need a pit stop from time to time.

Nice graphics without bumps and bruises

Graphically, there’s nothing bad about Need For Speed World. The cars are shiny and always show their best side: damage will never show up, so you won’t see any dents, scratches or torn fenders. Sound effects and music are similar to those you find on any game in the Need for Speed franchise.

In brief: solid online racing with a few flaws

Need For Speed World hasn't reinvented the genre of racing games, but it's definitely entered a new territory in racing MMOG. The gameplay is solid and its arcade style means that it's easy to start playing, perfect for less experienced players.

On a negative note, other players in free mode are only shown as ghosts, and you can drive through them. There is very little player interaction and the MMO community feeling is hardly noticeable, but in spite of these small glitches, if you're a racing game enthusiast, you should definitely dive into the Need For Speed World universe.

Sir, You Are Being Hunted alpha 0.2.4444

In the Survival game Sir, You Are Being Hunted, robots are in control and are the ones chasing people. You must escape the open gameworld and either defeat the hunters or sneak past them. The tested alpha version of Sir, You Are Being Hunted already makes a very solid impression.

Struggle for survival against deceitful robots

Something has gone horribly wrong in the Britain of Sir, You Are Being Hunted. Houses have been deserted and the ghost towns are patrolled by aggressive robots. As a human survivor, if you get too close to these robots, they'll start to hunt you.

In the world of Sir, You Are Being Hunted, abandoned houses can be searched and looted for valuable items. Food and medical equipment, as well as weapons and ammunition, are the most valuable objects in order to stave off hunger and treat bleeding wounds.

Dangerous Common Enemies

Sir, You Are Being Hunted plays like a first person shooter. Use the mouse and keyboard to move around and look at things from a first person perspective. You can collect objects with the push of a button and store them in your backpack, but its size limits the inventory of your collections. You also have the ability to load and change weapons rapidly.

In battle, robots don't simply defeat enemies by shooting accurately. Rather, they attack from a distance or bypass the enemy completely. Wounds must be mended and need time to heal, otherwise, you'll bleed to death.

Another key part of Sir, You Are Being Hunted is your constant battle with hunger and the search for food. If necessary, you can drink alcohol, but you stagger for a while afterwards.

You can only save your game progress in Sir, You Are Being Hunted at designated storage points. In addition, you can't enter buildings.

Randomly generated worlds with British touches

Sir, You Are Being Hunted lets the player get an inside look at Britain. The rural surroundings really make the game, including the day-night cycle. A random generator ensures that every new game looks slightly different. Musically, Sir, You Are Being Hunted keeps with British undertones. As the games progresses, the sound effects can be heard more clearly.

Conclusion: Fight for survival against vicious robot hunters

Sir, You Are Being Hunted is appealing with its constant struggle for survival: a Rambo mentality will not get you far. On the contrary, brains and deliberate action are needed to progress in the game.

Less skilful players will find that the hard fighting, the bleeding and the hunger, combined with finding the scarce ammunition, quickly tests their limits.

SOMA

SOMA asks you to step into a new horror from Frictional Games - the creators of Penumbra and Amnesia. Drawing gameplay inspiration from their previous titles, this experience thrusts you into a claustrophobic, underwater sci-fi world. But, while its themes of humanity and sanity are well explored in the fantastic told narrative, the scares falls a little flatter due to its deliberately disconnected fiction.

Connect with the claustrophobic world

From the opening moments of SOMA its lineage is clear, with it utilizing many of the tricks seen in Amnesia to root you in its engrossing world. Taking control of Simon, your main way to interact with the world is to grab elements in the environment – from tools to sealed airlock doors. You can then use the mouse or right-stick to pull, drag, or shove them in the desired direction. Combined with stealth-centric first-person controls, this tiny trick connects you with Simon in a way that proves quite apt as the game unravels.

But while it controls similarly to Amnesia, it is clear Frictional Games’s focus in SOMA has been its storytelling, and here it excels. Simon has a far better idea of who he is than the characters in the company’s previous titles. The world is also more dense and alive with believable details than the generic - but well realized - Lovecraftian-gothic style of their previous games.

This story is a mix of mystery and horror as, during a brain scan in the present day, Simon is transported to a confined-futuristic facility deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean. If that isn’t bad enough, all is not well in the deserted base which is dark and filled with of organic machinery.

It is a setting that gives Frictional Games more room to experiment and explore. During the course of its tale the action regularly switches between the restrictive interior and watery exterior of various structures altering the pace of play and the threats you must face.

A story that will drive you through the horror

During your journey through the world, you also begin to question Simon's existence. Is he really there, is Simon Simon, and what does it mean to be human? Reality continuously shifts around you to match your needs, including one occasion when you grow scuba gear on demand. This all provides you with clues that something is defiantly wrong, but the details are only filled in as you explore and discover.

Enemies also play on this uncertainty. A variety of lumbering robots and corrupted creatures cross the line between living and dead in this watery cemetery. As in the developer’s earlier titles, you have no way to defend yourself from these foes, making flight or hiding your only recourse.

Unfortunately, the disconnected nature of Simon's existence - and the concrete cybernetic nature of his foes - mean that the scares lack impact when compared to the indefinable terrors of Amnesia. While they undoubtedly remain unnerving, the semi-mechanical foes are more grounded and so less haunting. At some point this – combined with your own growing beliefs about what Simon has become - makes them little more than an inconvenience, an obstacle on your way to the next step in the fantastic story.

To further relieve SOMA’s tension, the tech filled setting enables some companionship. Remote calls, AIs, ghosts in machines, all of these provide something for you to connect with - further breaking the tension. This isn't a bad thing though, with these characters helping to evolve the complex and involving plot - propelling you forward even when the damp claustrophobia becomes oppressive.

A gripping sci-fi fiction

SOMA shares a lot of DNA with Frictional Games’s previous works, but with a notable boost in visual fidelity and polish – bar the occasional crash. Its setting and story may dissociate you from the horrors it establishes, but they are still creepy in the moment. Plus, its manageable scares mean that you are more likely to eventually make your way to the end of this thrilling sci-fi tale.

Eyes - The Horror Game 2.2

$

0

Slenderman made scary games popular. The aim is simple: collect clues and escape uninjured without laying eyes on the monster that stalks you. Eyes - The Horror Game continues this trend, but far from being a clone it adds its own spin to this dark game of cat and mouse.

Take the money and run

Why in horror movies and games do people always stay near the scary thing? Shouldn’t they just run screaming? It makes no sense. At least in Eyes - The Horror Game there is some explanation: you're in a the house of horrors to collect money. Hard cash. And who wouldn’t risk their life for a fistful of dollars?

Thus, the gameplay of Eyes - The Horror Game has you traveling around a strange house to find 12, 20, or 30 bags of cash (depending on the difficulty level you choose). The issue is that the house is guarded by a moody ghost who doesn’t want you to leave alive.

The ghost leaves you clues, red eyes painted on the walls . If you see one of these, get out. Hear strange cries? Stay away as far away as possible, the traumatized specter is nearby. Do you see a sign that says "RUN!"? Then make like Usain Bolt: your enemy is very close.

The righteous frights

Eyes - The Horror Game is a mechanical simple game in which you simply have to move around the house and use one button to pick up cash bags (they shine in the dark, so they are easy to spot).

Your survival is based on following the good signs and avoiding the bad ones as you dash from room to room: the ghost can only move through halls (except on the most difficult level... there anything goes).

Play your cards right and Eyes - The Horror Game can be a pretty good terror experience. The combination of light and shadow, and the mad dash from room to room, is a good take on the genre. In addition, the jump scares are not abundant so that when they arrive so when they hit you will find yourself leaping from your chair.

The ghost herself is lifted directly from Japanese horror films: she is a woman (or part thereof), with dark hair, and haunting eyes. Nothing new, but I find this human form far scarier than any monster.

A terrifying experience

As a horror title, Eyes - The Horror Game is not in innovative game - but its setting, gameplay, and villain are be perfect for genre fans. Moreover, despite being free, it offers hours of play because the of the three difficulty levels and how the bags are constantly changing location.
